Scope of Position:

This group provides measurement automation solutions and precision metrology services to Corning’s Optical Connectivity business to deliver best in class components to our customers.

  • You will provide technical support as a content expert surrounding metrology/precision engineering field, overall design metrics/GD&T, metrology fixture design/manufacturing and quality manufacturing systems.

  • You will need to be an advocate for supporting the utilization of precision metrology in new product and process development projects.

  • Will keep current and evaluate innovative technologies as they apply to the current and future needs in precision metrology for Corning’s Optical Connectivity Solutions business.

  • As the MSI Metrology onsite liaison, will assist with the development/application of a global metrology standardization to assure proper implementation, data integrity, traceability, and sustainability.

  • Will evaluate current metrology fixtures gaps and potential improvements with focus on efficiency and cost-savings. This includes developing3D metrology fixture design via AutoCAD/SolidWorks or other standard design package including supervision of ultimate manufacturing either internal or external.

  • Will assist with MSA/GR&R, GD&T for metrology, equipment operations, and technical training.

  • Will work closely with Quality and Manufacturing engineers in root cause analysis to assure data integrity. This requires broad understanding of various manufacturing techniques and process with particular attention to injection molds.

  • Work closely with experienced professionals and a variety of cross functional groups (manufacturing, development, engineering, etc.) to support mold metrology development/inspection.

  • Awareness of national and international standards relating to dimensional metrology and measurement uncertainty (e.g ISO GPS and ASME B89).

Day to Day Responsibilities:

  • Work directly with RY1 metrology/quality and MSI Metrology groups on ongoing metrology development and implementation.

  • Work on mold metrology early engagement providing support on design metrics review, developing/manufacturing metrology fixtures and deploying MSI driven metrology development to manufacturing. This includes adapting inspections program into RY1 metrology tools (CMM, Keyence…), developing QDA interfaces, confirming metrology capabilities through GR&R along with training onsite resources.

  • Will work assessing RY1 metrology systems to identify gaps/opportunities along with aligning resources for implementation. This will be focus on developing/sustaining a solid foundation for metrology application.

  • Will support metrology fixtures implementation/optimization to support quality data and cost-savings.

  • Will support ongoing root cause analysis to assure metrology capabilities and data integrity.

  • As a global SME in Precision Metrology, advise and support the metrology operations at RY manufacturing facilities.

  • RY onsite point of contact for implementation and issues surrounding QMS QDA software.

Preferred Skills:

  • Knowledge of metrology fundamentals: metrological traceability, measurement uncertainty/MSA/GR&R, calibration, metrological environmental effects, measured definition, etc.

  • Awareness of national and international standards relating to dimensional metrology and measurement uncertainty (e.g., ISO GPS and ASME B89).

  • Knowledge of metrology systems and associated software packages: Zeiss CMM O-Inspect with Calypso software, Keyence optical systems, Understanding of CT-Scan technology/limitations, Interferometers etc.

  • Knowledge of geometrical dimensioning and tolerancing per ASME Y14.5-2009.

  • Knowledge of statistical analysis of data: standard deviation, mean, statistical agreement tests, data transformation, trend identification, regression analysis, curve fitting etc.

  • Experience in fixture design/3D Modeling using any of design package such as AutoCAD, SolidWorks, Pro-Engineering.

  • Basic knowledge of plastic part mold-making methodologies.

  • Understanding of metrology impact to manufacturing process and monitors.

  • Desire to exceed internal customer expectations for quality and delivery.

Hours of work/work schedule/full-time

  • This position will require a 40+ hours/week depending on project work and deadlines.

Preferred Education and Experience

  • Bachelors or Master of Science degree in Mechanical or Optical Engineering with a minimum of 5 years of experience in the industry environment.
